Argentina's Plastic Recycling Drops 11% in 2025
Argentina’s plastic recycling sector recorded a sharp decline in 2025, with total recovered plastics falling 11% year‑on‑year to 235,352 tonnes, according to the 2025 Recycling Index compiled by Ecoplas and the Argentine Chamber of Plastic Recyclers (CAIRPLAS). Mechanical recycling, the dominant process, handled 198,025 tonnes but dropped 15% compared with the previous year, while energy recovery rose 23% to 37,327 tonnes.
The share of domestic post‑consumer plastics that were recycled fell from 25.8% to 14.6%, and the proportion of recycled plastic in total national consumption slipped from 16.66% to 12.44%. Experts attribute the downturn to weaker domestic consumption and volatile international price conditions. They call for a national extended producer responsibility (EPR) law for packaging, improved waste‑management infrastructure, better logistics, and stronger public education on source separation to revive the sector.
