Buenos Aires Province launches comprehensive mental health plan

The Governor of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof, has introduced the second Provincial Mental Health Plan for the 2026-2031 period. Presented in Ensenada, the initiative aims to strengthen prevention, clinical care, and community support systems.

Kicillof linked the rising demand for mental health services to the current economic climate, stating that social indicators such as job loss and increased debt are contributing to greater psychological distress among the population. The plan includes expanding territorial support, improving access to medication, and providing housing assistance for those transitioning out of institutional care.

To address the critical issue of suicide, which has become a leading cause of violent death among Argentine youth, the province is reinforcing its 24-hour crisis hotline (0800-222-5462) and implementing new clinical guidelines for hospital emergency departments. The strategy involves coordinated efforts across the health, education, security, and communication ministries.
