Buenos Aires Province launches $530 bn climate risk management plan

The Buenos Aires provincial Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Services is rolling out a Climate Risk Management Plan backed by more than AR$530 billion in funding. The programme targets three main pillars – a monitoring and early‑warning system, preventive and emergency response actions, and structural adaptations.

Key tools include the Intelligent Monitoring System for Hydrometeorological Risk (SIMPARH), the Risk and Emergency Management Committee (CORE) and a water‑risk board. Urban flood control will receive AR$284.983 billion for 135 interventions and seven studies covering drainage, coastal defenses and other measures. An additional AR$245.759 billion will fund ten regional hydraulic projects to boost agricultural resilience against floods and droughts. The plan aims to strengthen prevention, coordination and response as the province anticipates more intense weather events, including a potentially strong El Niño.

The initiative reflects growing provincial concern over climate‑driven extremes and seeks to provide more accurate data, faster emergency actions and long‑term infrastructure to protect communities and the province’s key agro‑industrial sector.
