Argentina's Buenos Aires and Santa Fe provinces face new tax burdens

Buenos Aires Province Governor Axel Kicillof announced a plan to introduce segmented export duties for agricultural producers, arguing that smaller farms should pay proportionally less. The proposal, presented by provincial agriculture minister Javier Rodríguez at the annual AFA assembly in Rosario, mirrors the 2008 national Retenciones system but would be applied at the provincial level, raising questions about its constitutional legality.

In Santa Fe, a recent IIEP‑CONICET analysis found residential electricity bills to be the third most expensive in the country, driven by the highest provincial tax levies on power charges. The report notes that taxes account for about one‑third of the total bill, outpacing cost components in other regions and contributing to the steep tariffs faced by consumers.
