Buenos Aires Province Senate pushes reform of 1958 Municipal Law

The Senate’s Municipal Affairs Commission, chaired by provincial senator Diego Valenzuela, held a session to examine the present state and future of municipalities in Buenos Aires Province. Economists Walter Rosales and Agustín Lodola presented analyses of the fiscal and institutional challenges faced by local districts, concluding that the 1958 Organic Law of Municipalities no longer matches current responsibilities. Participants agreed on the need to modernise the regime, granting greater autonomy, management capacity and tools for local development. Valenzuela announced a dialogue process with mayors, academics and other stakeholders to draft a comprehensive reform proposal, including discussions on municipal police forces under provincial legislation.
