Buenos Aires province updates traffic fine rates and debates license regulations

The Ministry of Transport has announced updated traffic fine rates for the Province of Buenos Aires for August. The scale is based on the 'Unidad Fija', which has been adjusted to 2,271 pesos, representing a 2.5% increase linked to the cost of premium fuel.

High-severity infractions, such as driving without technical vehicle verification (VTV), speeding, driving under the influence, or driving against traffic, can result in maximum penalties of up to 2,271,000 pesos. Other violations, including running red lights or failing to use a seatbelt, carry fines ranging from 227,100 pesos to over one million pesos. Using a mobile phone while driving carries penalties between 227,100 and 454,200 pesos.

Simultaneously, the provincial legislature is debating potential changes to how fines affect driver's license procedures. Current regulations require outstanding fines with firm judicial sentences to be settled before a license can be issued or renewed. However, legislative proposals, including those by deputies Juan Osaba and Valentín Miranda, seek to decouple the payment of fines from the ability to obtain or renew a license, arguing that debts should be collected through administrative or judicial channels without automatically blocking driving privileges, except in cases of active disqualification.
