Buenos Aires reelection law to bar nearly half of mayors in 2027

A law in the Province of Buenos Aires limiting consecutive terms will impact nearly half of the province's mayors in the 2027 elections. Currently, 63 out of 135 mayors in office will be barred from seeking reelection due to the legislation.

The law, originally approved in 2016 and modified in 2021, establishes a limit of two consecutive terms. The 2027 elections will be the first where these restrictions are fully applied to municipal leaders. Notable figures facing these restrictions include Ricardo Curutchet of Marcos Paz, who has governed since 2003, and several mayors who have held office since 2015, such as Ariel Sujarchuk, Gustavo Menéndez, and Julio Zamora.

While the law has already affected provincial legislators, there are ongoing political discussions and rumors regarding potential judicial decisions or legislative modifications that could alter these reelection limits before the 2027 vote.
