Buenos Aires Rural Producers Demand Road Tax Cut and Faster Road Repairs
Rural producers from Colón, a district in northern Buenos Aires Province, delivered a formal letter to Mayor Waldemar Giordano and the municipal council demanding a reduction of the road tax to a uniform 10,000 Argentine pesos per hectare and the elimination of progressive rate structures they deem unconstitutional. The letter, signed by about 100 producers and presented by José Manfredini, vice‑president of the Sociedad Rural de Colón, and Pablo Francescangeli, set a 20‑day deadline for a response, warning that legal action will follow if their demands are not met. The producers argue that the current rural road network is in a “grave and unsustainable” condition, directly harming agricultural production, connectivity and the local economy.
The Colegio de Ingenieros de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, led by president Jorge O. Castellano, issued a statement supporting the idea of private financing for road maintenance but stressing that any work must be planned and executed by licensed engineers. The engineers warned that improper interventions could disrupt water flow, cause structural failures and affect neighboring farms. They emphasized that provincial regulations already govern such projects and that each road requires a specific technical study before any work begins.
