Buenos Aires Senate blocks Kicillof health reform projects

The Buenos Aires Senate failed to debate two major health initiatives proposed by Governor Axel Kicillof due to a lack of a two-thirds majority. The projects, which aim to create a state-owned pharmaceutical laboratory and integrate the provincial health system through the Sistema Integrado de Salud de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (SIPBA), required 31 votes to proceed to a floor session.

Although the Fuerza Patria bloc secured favorable reports from the General Legislation Commission, opposition blocks including La Libertad Avanza, PRO, and Hechos blocked the movement. The Unión y Libertad bloc opted to abstain, which was insufficient to reach the necessary threshold.

The SIPBA project seeks to coordinate public, private, and social security health sectors under the provincial Ministry of Health to improve service access. The pharmaceutical initiative aims to strengthen public production of medicines to ensure supply and reduce costs across the province and its municipalities.
