Argentina government appeals university funding ruling

The Argentine government has appealed a judicial ruling regarding the University Financing Law. Judge Diego Martín Cormick recently accepted the government's appeal against the decision that declared Decree 759/2025 unconstitutional. However, the judge ruled that the existing injunction remains in effect, meaning the state is still obligated to fulfill payments for faculty and staff salaries, student scholarships, and university operating funds.

The Ministry of Human Capital argues that the ruling causes “significant institutional gravity” and threatens the nation's fiscal balance, as it mandates spending without clearly identified funding sources. The government maintains that the law must be implemented in harmony with existing budgetary regulations.

Amidst this legal battle, the academic community is preparing for the fifth Federal University March on October 15. Organized by the National University Council (CIN) and various unions, the nationwide mobilization aims to demand the full application of the University Financing Law, salary recomposition, and a budget that ensures the continued operation of public higher education and scientific research.
