Buenos Aires to Transform Historic Tram Station into New Public Plaza

The Buenos Aires City Government announced that the disused San Cristóbal tram station, built in 1904, will be redeveloped into a 13,550 m² public plaza. The project will preserve the brick façade and existing metal structures, adding grass, new trees, a playground with rubber flooring, a sports court, a calisthenics area, and a semi‑covered cultural space for art exhibitions and sculpture displays. Work is slated to last 14 months with completion targeted for the second half of 2027, benefiting more than 20,000 neighbourhood residents.

In parallel, the city is expanding gastronomic concessions across parks, plazas and cultural venues. Seventeen food outlets are already operating in Ministry of Culture sites, with six more under construction at landmarks such as the Galileo Galilei Planetarium and the Eva Perón Amphitheatre. A total of 30 concessions are planned, including new licences for locations like the Torre Monumental and the Quinquela Martín Museum. While the initiative aims to enhance visitor experience and generate private investment, environmental groups have raised concerns about ecological impacts and the privatization of public space. Governor Jorge Macri defended the plan, emphasizing the need for quality services in public areas.
