Buenos Aires university march protests budget cuts and hospital conditions

On May 13, 2026, thousands of students, teachers, families and union groups gathered in Buenos Aires for the fourth federal university march. Organised by the Coordinadora de Estudiantes de Base and supported by ADUBA, UNCEP and other bodies, the procession moved through Callao and Avenida de Mayo, displaying banners demanding higher salaries, restored funding for university infrastructure and research, and better conditions in university hospitals.

Protesters criticised the government's austerity measures, calling President Javier Milei “reprobado” and accusing him of neglecting public universities and health services. Vicerrector Emiliano Yacobitti warned that recent adjustments to the budget on infrastructure and investigation had provoked “provocations” against the university sector. The march highlighted the broader discontent among Argentina’s public‑university community over funding cuts and perceived violations of the law.

The demonstration featured creative homemade signs, chants, and a prominent black flag urging “Defendamos la UBA”. Participants estimated around 4,000 students from roughly 20 schools, alongside faculty and hospital staff, taking part in the unified call for dialogue with the government.
