Mid‑July 2026 cold front brings heavy rain and storms to Uruguay, Argentina, Spain and Chile

Meteorologists in Uruguay warned that between Tuesday and Thursday the country will see up to 100 mm of rain, thunderstorms and possible hail across seven eastern and northeastern departments, a pattern they said could foreshadow a strong El Niño later in the season.

In Argentina’s Entre Ríos province, the national weather service predicts a frontal system arriving on Thursday that will trigger thunderstorms, rain showers of 20‑40 mm and wind gusts near 50 km/h, followed by a rapid temperature drop for the weekend.

Spain’s Castilla y León region received an AEMET alert for locally strong storms on Sunday, with a risk of hail in the extreme northeast, temperatures falling to mid‑teens at night and maximums ranging from 30 °C to 36 °C.

Chile’s Valparaíso region’s water utility Esval has activated a preventive alert as the first intense winter frontal system is expected to bring heavy precipitation and strong winds, prompting heightened monitoring of sewage and drainage infrastructure.

The Canary Islands are forecast to have a stable Tuesday before a moderate temperature rise mid‑week, with partly cloudy skies, moderate northeasterly winds and no active weather warnings.
