Buffalo Bills debut new grass field at Highmark Stadium

The Buffalo Bills have completed the installation of a new Kentucky bluegrass field at Highmark Stadium following issues with the previous sod. The decision to re-sod the field comes after the initial installation in October 2025 faced scrutiny during preseason activities when the surface began peeling in certain areas.

Players have expressed positive early feedback regarding the new surface. Bills center Connor McGovern noted that the new field “already feels so much better,” comparing the previous surface to a golf course that lacked the stability of their practice field.

This transition aligns with a broader preference among NFL athletes; the NFL Players Association reports that 92% of its members favor natural grass over artificial surfaces. While the NFL does not mandate a specific surface type, the league is currently working with the NFLPA to establish consistency standards across all 30 playing surfaces.
