Buffalo Bills replace Highmark Stadium grass after preseason failures

The Buffalo Bills have decided to entirely replace the natural grass playing surface at Highmark Stadium following significant failures during two preseason games. The decision comes after reports of grass separating, large damaged patches, and sod chunks coming loose. The organization intends to complete the installation of new sod during a three-week window before the regular-season home opener against the Detroit Lions on September 17, 2026.

Industry experts have criticized the quality of the initial installation. Legendary groundskeeper George Toma described the rapid failure as “terrible,” suggesting a lack of oversight. An anonymous sports agronomist characterized the surface as “the worst sod I’ve seen in the NFL in my career.” Additionally, sports management professor Tony Dick expressed concerns regarding player safety, noting that the condition of the grass appeared less safe than the artificial turf previously used.

The Bills stated they have consulted with the NFL and independent experts, who recommended the replacement. The NFL will inspect the new field to ensure it meets league standards before competitive play begins.
