Buffalo City Metro corruption probe authorized by President

President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorized the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate allegations of serious maladministration, corruption, and unlawful conduct within the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality and the Buffalo City Metro Development Agency.

The probe will focus on six specific contracts and procurement processes. These include the Mdantsane NU2 swimming pool project, the appointment of First New Generation Trading (Pty) Ltd for wall demolition, the appointment of Lefito Trading (trading as Kuyasa Electrical Contractors) for the removal of the Donkin wall and palisade installation, and consulting engineer services and main contracting for the Water World Project.

The SIU aims to examine the unlawful appropriation of public funds, irregular transactions involving state property, and payments that were not competitive, transparent, or cost-effective. Municipal spokesperson Luzuko Buku stated that the municipality will continue its own internal investigations and disciplinary processes alongside the SIU's work to ensure accountability.
