Buffalo Sabres sign Matt Grzelcyk to bolster defense

The Buffalo Sabres have signed veteran defenseman Matt Grzelcyk to a one-year, $850,000 contract to bolster their blue line following recent injuries. Grzelcyk, 32, provides experienced depth as the team seeks to stabilize its defensive unit.

The signing comes as the Sabres manage injuries to Mattias Samuelsson and Olen Zellweger, both sustained during a preseason game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Head coach Lindy Ruff reported that Samuelsson is currently week-to-week with a lower-body injury, while Zellweger has begun skating again after being placed in concussion protocol. Ruff anticipates Zellweger could be ready for the season opener in Columbus.

Grzelcyk, a puck-moving defender with significant NHL experience, most recently played for the Chicago Blackhawks. Ruff noted that the veteran's presence is intended to provide stability and a competitive edge to the roster.
