Buffalo Sabres sign Zach Metsa to $900,000 extension

The Buffalo Sabres have signed defenseman Zach Metsa to a one-year contract extension worth $900,000. The one-way deal secures the 27-year-old through the 2027-28 NHL season, adding to the final year of his existing contract.

Metsa, an undrafted player who rose through the American Hockey League, established himself as a reliable depth option during the 2025-26 season. In 43 regular-season games, he recorded six points and a +16 rating, which was the highest among NHL defensemen playing fewer than 600 minutes.

Statistical data indicates Metsa provided significant defensive value, posting the lowest goals-against per 60 minutes (1.06) on the Sabres roster during 5-on-5 play. The team recorded a 31-7-5 record in games where Metsa was in the lineup. He also appeared in two postseason games, scoring his first career playoff goal.
