Build Europe lobbies for massive housing construction in EU
The European housing crisis has prompted increased political and industry action to address supply shortages and rising costs. Build Europe, a lobby representing over 30,000 construction and development companies across ten EU member states, is advocating for a legal framework that encourages massive new construction to mitigate what it describes as a social crisis threatening European cohesion.
The European Commission has signaled urgency, with data suggesting that approximately 650,000 additional homes must be built annually over the next decade—totaling 10 million new houses—to alleviate accessibility issues. This requirement exceeds the current annual construction rate of 1.6 million units. To address this, the Commission has appointed Dan Jørgensen as a commissioner specifically dedicated to housing matters.
