Building Commission NSW fines solar traders in Hunter Region

Building Commission NSW has issued over $22,500 in fines to solar and battery-related businesses in the Hunter Region following a crackdown on substandard electrical work during the 2025-26 financial year. The enforcement action included 18 fines and 61 written direction notices issued to contractors for non-compliance.

Common issues identified during more than 120 regional inspections included defective work, non-performance of services, and the non-supply or partial supply of goods. Specific technical failures involved non-compliant battery signage and the improper installation of Residual Current Devices (RCDs), which are critical safety switches designed to prevent electric shocks and fires.

The surge in inspections follows a significant increase in renewable energy adoption, with over 239,000 solar and battery installations recorded across New South Wales in the last financial year. The Commission is working with various government bodies to maintain installation quality and has appointed dedicated complaint case managers to assist consumers with dispute resolution.
