Bujang Raba becomes Indonesia's first social forestry group in carbon trading
The Bujang Raba landscape in Jambi has become the first social forestry group in Indonesia to receive approval for carbon trading within the forestry sector. This milestone aims to make carbon trading more inclusive, ensuring that economic benefits extend beyond large concession holders to include indigenous communities and forest villages that actively protect the area.
Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni stated that the scheme is designed so that carbon benefits can be accessed by social forestry groups, customary law communities, and forest villages. The Bujang Raba landscape has demonstrated significant success in protecting forests from forest and land fires (karhutla).
The approval follows a period of regulatory development, including the issuance of Presidential Regulation Number 110 of 2025 and Ministry of Forestry Regulation Number 6 of 2026. Following the handover of the Non-SPE issuance approval during the launch of the Indonesia Forestry Carbon Hub in July 2026, the project documents are currently being processed through the Carbon Unit Registry System (SRUK).
