Buje Mayor Fabrizio Vižintin resigns amid corruption probe

Fabrizio Vižintin has submitted his irrevocable resignation as the mayor of Buje, Croatia. The decision follows his arrest in July as part of an investigation by the Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organized Crime (USKOK). Vižintin is suspected of abuse of office and favoritism regarding the awarding of municipal contracts.

Since his arrest, Vižintin has been held in pretrial detention, a measure that was extended in August. During his detention, independent city councilor Danilo Pištan was appointed as temporary deputy to ensure the continued functioning of the city administration.

The local branch of the HDZ party described the resignation as an act of political responsibility and human correctness, emphasizing the need for transparency and the lawful operation of city institutions. Buje is now expected to hold early elections for a new mayor within three months.
