Bukavu fire kills at least 24 students in DR Congo schools

A devastating fire in the rebel-controlled city of Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, has resulted in a significant loss of life. The blaze, which began in a residential area on Thursday morning, rapidly spread to the Ujamaa Primary School and Furaha Secondary School in the Kadutu commune.

Provisional death tolls vary among reporting sources, with local authorities and provincial government officials citing between 24 and 26 fatalities, many of whom were students. Reports indicate that a violent stampede occurred as children attempted to flee the burning buildings through narrow exits, contributing to the casualties. At least 29 people were reported injured, with several in intensive care.

The fire also caused extensive property damage, destroying between 300 and 500 wooden homes and a local clinic. Bukavu is currently under the control of the AFC/M23 rebel movement. Investigations into the exact cause of the fire are ongoing, as authorities work to consolidate a final casualty count.
