Bukayo Saka says England still carry World Cup semi-final scar
England winger Bukayo Saka has stated that the national team is still dealing with the emotional “scar” of their 2026 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina. Despite securing third place with a 6-4 victory over France, the squad remains affected by the late 2-1 loss in Atlanta that prevented them from reaching their first men's final since 1966.
Saka, who managed an Achilles injury during the tournament, noted that the sense of unity and confidence shared by the players and the country makes the disappointment difficult to overcome. He emphasized the need to “draw a line under it” as the team transitions into the new international season.
Under manager Thomas Tuchel, England is preparing to begin its Nations League campaign with a match against Spain at Wembley. Tuchel has acknowledged the need for reflection and critical reviews following the World Cup as the team looks toward future goals, including Euro 2028.
