Buket Akıncı stresses importance of movement for healthy aging

Prof. Dr. Buket Akıncı, Head of the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department at Biruni University, emphasizes that regular physical activity is vital for maintaining independence and health during aging. Speaking on World Physiotherapy Day, Akıncı noted that true longevity is not just about increasing lifespan, but about preserving mobility and the ability to participate in social life.

Physical activity plays a critical role in preventing cardiovascular diseases and strokes, and supports rehabilitation after such illnesses. Akıncı stated, “Real longevity aims not only to survive but to remain part of life.” She highlighted that being able to perform daily tasks—such as climbing stairs, shopping, or playing with grandchildren—is as important as the total number of years lived.

To achieve these benefits, intensive sports programs are not strictly necessary; simple activities like brisk walking, cycling, or swimming can support the cardiovascular system. Akıncı advised that physical activity programs should be personalized based on an individual's specific health status.
