Bukovina implements measures to prevent bear conflicts
The village of Bukovina in the Liptov region has implemented several preventive measures to reduce conflicts between residents and bears. As part of a pilot project by the conservation organization My sme les, the village has introduced electric fencing around the local cemetery, improved lighting, and installed bear-resistant waste containers.
Local authorities and conservationists noted that bears were frequently drawn to the cemetery by the scent of aromatic candles, causing damage to tombstones and making residents feel unsafe visiting at night. To address this, 30 bear-resistant communal waste containers will be provided to the residents. The project also emphasizes long-term solutions through community education and awareness to minimize human-wildlife encounters.
