Bulawayo celebrates King Mzilikazi Day to promote tourism and unity

Commemorations for King Mzilikazi are underway in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, with organizers focusing on promoting cultural tourism, national unity, and heritage preservation. The festivities include Children’s Day activities and a planned march through various neighborhoods, including Matshobana, Makokoba, and Nxwala, leading to the Mhlahlandlela King Mzilikazi Memorial Site.

Bigboy Sibanda of the Mthwakazi ka Mzilikazi Cultural Association (MMCA) noted that the event aims to pass cultural knowledge to younger generations through educational activities and lessons on traditional culinary practices. The celebrations are also expected to attract international delegates and artists.

Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart emphasized that the commemorations should serve as a unifying force rather than a source of division. He suggested that the city and nation could leverage the rich history and traditions surrounding King Mzilikazi to create economic opportunities and jobs, particularly through the effective marketing of historical and cultural tourism.
