Bill Gates proposes flight route changes to reduce global warming

Bill Gates suggests that modifying flight routes to avoid the formation of contrails could potentially reduce global warming by up to 2 percent. Contrails, which are ice crystals formed from water vapor in aircraft exhaust, contribute significantly to warming by trapping heat in the atmosphere. Research indicates that while contrails are widespread, only about two percent of all flights are responsible for approximately 80 percent of the warming effect caused by these streaks.

Gates estimates that the necessary changes would only require about five percent of all flights to slightly adjust their paths. This approach is considered a cost-effective climate mitigation strategy, with estimated costs of only one to two US dollars per ton of avoided CO2-equivalent climate impact. The method does not require new aircraft or engine technology, and initial flight tests have shown promising results.
