Bulgargaz proposes 34% increase in natural gas prices for November

Bulgargaz has submitted a proposal to the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) for a November natural gas price of 59.08 EUR/MWh, excluding access, transmission, excise, and VAT. This represents a 34% increase compared to the current October tariff of 44.09 EUR/MWh. The company noted that the proposed rate is approximately 30% lower than current European market prices.

The November price mix includes supplies from long-term contracts with Azerbaijan, the Alexandroupolis terminal, and Turkey, as well as extraction from the Chiren underground gas storage facility. The proposed price also includes components to cover Bulgargaz's costs for storing quantities in the Chiren facility as part of its emergency action plan.

Energy expert Martin Vladimirov noted that while long-term Azerbaijani contracts provide a buffer—with costs around 30 EUR/MWh—they only cover about half of Bulgaria's consumption. He warned that the gas price hike could lead to a 20% increase in central heating costs and impact businesses such as fertilizer plants, glass factories, and greenhouses. The EWRC is expected to make a final decision following a public discussion.
