Bulgaria aims to double foreign tourist arrivals by 2029, says Tourism Minister Ilin Dimitrov

Tourism Minister Ilin Dimitrov announced that Bulgaria intends to double the number of foreign visitors from about 4 million today to roughly 8 million by the end of the government’s term in 2029. The goal is expected to raise tourism’s contribution to GDP by around 2 percent.

The plan focuses on simplifying visa procedures and expanding consular capacity, especially for Turkish citizens who already form a strong visitor base, and for Chinese tourists, whose visa numbers are currently limited. A targeted “Plan Marshall” for the German market aims to raise German arrivals from 300 000 to 1.1 million, while coordinated visits by Turkish tour operators will promote Bulgaria’s spa and ski resorts such as Bansko and Borovets.

Dimitrov also highlighted the need for better air connectivity, including a direct flight route to China, and increased charter flights from Germany to extend the tourist season. Early signs this season show high occupancy levels, signalling momentum for the broader strategy.
