Bulgaria and Slovakia expand nuclear and gas energy cooperation

Bulgaria and Slovakia are expanding their energy partnership, focusing on nuclear energy, natural gas supply, and renewable sources. During the 19th European Nuclear Energy Forum in Prague, Bulgarian Energy Minister Iva Petrova and Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Denisa Sakova discussed deepening bilateral cooperation. Key topics included exchanging expertise on building new nuclear capacities, diversifying nuclear fuel, and managing the decommissioning of nuclear plants.

The two nations are also working on the Vertical Gas Corridor initiative. Discussions involved potential trade cooperation between Bulgargaz and the Slovak company SPP regarding liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure, storage, and cross-border supply routes to enhance energy security in Central and Southeast Europe.

Separately, Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár expressed interest in establishing nuclear research cooperation with Australia. During a visit to the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, Blanár highlighted opportunities for collaboration in nuclear medicine, radiopharmaceutical production, advanced materials, radiation protection, and specialized education, aiming to connect Slovak research centers with Australian partners.
