Bulgaria announces 300 million euro relief package for fuel costs

The Bulgarian government has announced a package of measures valued at over 300 million euros to address rising fuel prices. Key components include a one-time 50-euro inflation check for more than 550,000 low-income citizens and subsidies for over 14,000 agricultural producers.

Political figures have expressed varying views on the effectiveness of these measures. Deputy Ivan Angelov defended the plan, stating that the subsidies are regulated by the European Union and will not only benefit large-scale producers. He also noted that the government had to manage a difficult financial situation to ensure public payments.

Conversely, opposition members have criticized the relief efforts. Deputy Vladislav Panev described the 50-euro payment as a “drop in the ocean” regarding inflation, linking the limited scope of aid to a 5.7% budget deficit. Temenuzhka Petkova of GERB-SDS questioned the targeting of the funds, suggesting the measure might be pro-inflationary and expressing doubt that the agricultural support would significantly lower food prices.
