Bulgaria approves purchase of five IRIS-T SLM missile systems
Bulgaria's parliamentary defense commission has approved the acquisition of five additional IRIS-T SLM anti-aircraft missile systems through the European ‘Security Assistance for Europe’ (SAFE) instrument. The vote passed with 16 in favor and one against.
The project consists of two stages with a total value of 1,106,466,933 euros. The first stage involves an updated plan for a single IRIS-T SLM system, where the replacement of a multi-sensor tracker has reduced the contract price from 182,114,311 euros to 180,605,928 euros and shortened delivery timelines.
The second stage includes the five new missile systems, initial logistical support, anti-aircraft missiles, and additional equipment. The plan also covers long-term industrial cooperation, the construction of infrastructure for system operation, and facilities for missile storage and maintenance. Additionally, the procurement process will explore the acquisition of unmanned aerial systems to complement the new missile complexes to enhance the Bulgarian Air Force's air defense capabilities.
