Bulgaria backs Morocco's autonomy proposal for Western Sahara

Bulgaria officially reaffirmed its support for Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara, stating that a "real autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty" could provide a viable solution to the long‑standing dispute. The position was announced after a telephone conversation between Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova‑Chamova and her Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, and references United Nations Security Council resolution 2797.

Sofia emphasized that Morocco's 2007 autonomy proposal constitutes a serious, credible and realistic basis for a just, durable and mutually acceptable political settlement. The endorsement reflects a growing international trend of backing Morocco's sovereignty claims, with backing from the United States, France, Spain and several African and European states, and highlights the diplomatic efforts of King Mohammed VI.
