The General Directorate for Organized Crime (GDBOP) carried out a large‑scale operation in Sofia’s “Faculteta” district, destroying a high‑tech clandestine laboratory that produced fentanyl. Officials said the facility could manufacture between six and ten kilograms of the synthetic opioid each day – enough for roughly five to six million daily doses. Ten people were arrested, ages 42‑53, with three identified as the main producers.

Interior Ministry secretary Lubomir Nikolov stated the lab supplied the whole country, while Prime Minister Rumen Radев praised the Ministry of Interior for the successful raid. Security expert Tihomir Bezlov warned that the bust may create a shortage on the illegal market. Toxicologists emphasized the extreme danger, noting that as little as two milligrams of fentanyl can be fatal for an adult, causing death within seconds.

The operation marks the first known domestic fentanyl production facility in Bulgaria, shifting the country’s role from a transit point to a producer of the potent opioid and prompting calls for urgent changes in health policy and addiction treatment.
