Bulgaria Central Election Commission reports low voter turnout
The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Bulgaria reported a voter turnout of 22.98% as of 16:00 during the presidential elections. This figure indicates a trend toward potentially one of the lowest participation rates in the country's history. Regional disparities are significant, with the 23rd district in Sofia recording the highest activity at 37.52%, while the Kardzhali region reported the lowest at 8.51%. In 14 provinces, turnout remained below 20%.
CEC spokesperson Stoyanka Balova stated that the budget for both election rounds is approximately 3 million euros. This funding covers explanatory campaigns, remuneration for regional and local election commissions, staff, and training.
To address technical issues, the CEC issued instructions to municipalities regarding voting procedures. This follows instances where votes might not be recorded due to voters pulling voting cards before the audio signal or power interruptions. The commission also addressed machine malfunctions from the first round, noting that 31 machines had issues, including two abroad, but confirmed these cases have been resolved.
