Bulgaria faces political dispute over UN Ukraine statement
A political dispute has emerged in Bulgaria regarding the country's involvement in a joint political statement at the United Nations supporting Ukraine. The controversy centers on conflicting signals between President Iliana Yotova and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
President Yotova clarified that she did not personally sign the statement, noting that it was a joint political announcement sent to member states prior to the UN General Assembly session. She stated that Bulgaria had no opportunity to propose amendments or express reservations, and consequently, she did not attend the extended Security Council meeting. Yotova emphasized her position that there is no military solution for Ukraine and that peace requires the participation of both Ukraine and Russia.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintained that Bulgaria supported the statement to uphold European unity, though it acknowledged that the national position was not fully reflected in the text. This disagreement has led to calls from opposition parties, such as Progressive Bulgaria, for parliamentary debate and accountability from foreign policy officials. The dispute highlights internal friction regarding how Bulgaria's foreign policy is represented on the international stage.
