Bulgaria considers restrictions for young drivers

Bulgarian Transport Minister Georgi Peev has announced several proposals aimed at improving road safety for novice drivers. One key concept involves mandatory restrictions on the engine power of vehicles that young drivers can operate during their first two years of holding a license.

Other measures under consideration include requiring new drivers to be accompanied by an experienced driver for a set period. Additionally, the ministry proposes that new drivers undergo supplementary training at specialized test tracks for two years to enhance skills acquired during basic driving courses.

To support this, the Ministry of Transport aims to build at least six specialized training polygons in various Bulgarian cities. Minister Peev noted that approximately 50% of accidents involving young drivers last year were single-vehicle accidents, suggesting that many crashes are caused by inexperience or a lack of advanced driving skills. These proposals will undergo further discussion to potentially form a national safety concept.
