Bulgaria discussed as potential site for Ukraine peace talks

Bulgarian President Iliana Yotova and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Ivan Angelov have commented on the recent visit of Kyrylo Budanov, Chief of Staff to the Ukrainian President, to Sofia. The meeting, which was held under high security, was requested by the Ukrainian side and focused on peace negotiations.

Ivan Angelov suggested that Bulgaria could potentially serve as a venue for permanent peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, noting that the visit was a significant diplomatic signal. He emphasized the need for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, citing the exhaustion of Russia, Ukraine, and Europe, as well as the rising costs of energy and fuel.

President Yotova stated that Bulgaria maintains an active foreign policy and supports the necessity of peace negotiations. Regarding maritime security, she noted that Bulgaria is working to gather evidence concerning recent drone strikes on two ships within Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea. She also highlighted broader regional concerns, including diesel shortages and energy security risks affecting Europe.
