Bulgaria faces grain export risks as ships avoid Black Sea ports
Bulgaria is facing significant challenges in exporting its wheat supply due to increasing maritime risks in the Black Sea. Iliya Prodanov, chairman of the National Association of Grain Producers, reported that some vessels have already refused to dock at Bulgarian ports, while others are delaying their arrival by remaining in the southern part of the Black Sea.
Bulgaria currently has approximately 5 million tons of wheat available for export. Prodanov warned that if the situation does not normalize, the country risks being unable to export its available stock. The instability is linked to the ongoing security situation in the region, which has caused shipping insurance costs to rise five to six times since the start of the war in Ukraine.
The Black Sea region is a critical component of the global wheat trade. While global production is roughly 800 million tons, only about 200 million tons are traded internationally. The Black Sea region can account for up to 50% of this international trade in certain years.
