Bulgaria faces investigations into vote buying and police misconduct

Bulgaria is facing scrutiny regarding both election integrity and police conduct. The Ministry of Interior reported receiving 64 signals of election law violations as of October 19, with 59 specifically involving allegations of vote buying. While officials stated that there has not been significant activity regarding vote buying, five criminal proceedings have been initiated, and specialized police operations are ongoing to ensure free and fair voting.

Separately, European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice and the Rule of Law, Michael McGrath, has announced an inspection into data regarding police use of force in Bulgaria. This follows reports of substantial police misconduct, including allegations of beatings, the use of electric shocks, illegal detentions, and threats. During a European Parliament meeting, MEP Elena Yoncheva raised concerns about whether Bulgarian authorities are ensuring accountability for these actions, questioning the institutional responsibility of the Ministry of Interior.
