Bulgaria faces rising fuel and tourism costs

Bulgaria is experiencing significant price increases across various sectors, notably in fuel and tourism services. In the Black Sea coastal regions, consumers have reported high costs for basic items, such as a single cocktail priced at 33 euros and coffee with soft drinks totaling nearly 30 leva.

Diesel prices are approaching the critical 2-euro per liter threshold, with some locations reaching 1.90 euros. Bulgaria has seen a 22.2% annual increase in fuel costs as of July, outpacing the EU average of 16.9%. Experts from the Petroleum and Gas Association state that while fuel is available and local refineries can meet domestic demand, prices are rising due to a global diesel shortage. This shortage is attributed to reduced Russian exports following refinery strikes and supply constraints near the Strait of Hormuz.

Industry representatives warn against panic regarding fuel shortages, clarifying that the primary issue is cost rather than availability. Trends suggest a gradual increase in diesel prices in the coming weeks due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing transition to alternative raw materials in local refineries.
