Bulgaria faces rising drug deaths and spreading substance abuse

Bulgaria is facing a growing drug crisis characterized by rising mortality rates and the spread of substance abuse into smaller towns. In 2025, 125 drug-related deaths have been reported in the country.

Experts from the Altera Vida addiction treatment center note a shift in the types of substances being used. While opioids remain a concern, there is an increasing presence of fentanyl, methamphetamines, amphetamines, and cocaine. The emergence of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is particularly noted for its high risk of overdose.

Reports indicate that the issue is no longer confined to major urban centers. In cities like Plovdiv and smaller towns such as Rakovski, citizens have reported frequent sightings of individuals in highly incapacitated or erratic states in public spaces. Specialists emphasize that addiction often manifests through subtle behavioral changes—such as isolation or financial issues—long before a crisis occurs, and urge early intervention to prevent fatal outcomes.
