Bulgaria faces sharp industrial decline amid Eurozone economic slowdown

Bulgaria has emerged as one of the top three European Union nations experiencing a significant decline in industrial production. As of August 2026, the country reported an annual decrease in industrial output exceeding 9.4%.

This downturn follows a period of contraction in 2025, during which Bulgarian goods exports fell by 3.2% and total exports of goods and services decreased by 1.9%. The impact has been most severe within the European market, where exports to EU member states dropped by 3.8% in 2025.

The decline is driven by stagnating demand from key trading partners, including Germany, Romania, Italy, Greece, and France, which together account for nearly 64% of Bulgaria's exports to the EU. Simultaneously, businesses across the Eurozone are facing tightening credit conditions. According to European Central Bank data, access to bank financing is becoming more difficult, with rising interest rates and stricter collateral requirements affecting both large and small enterprises.
