Bulgaria political party alleges dual versions of pension letter to EU

The political party “Da, Bulgaria” has accused the Bulgarian government of sending two conflicting versions of an official letter to the European Commission regarding the country’s second pension pillar. According to the party, both documents share the same registration number (37-01-66) and are dated November 2, 2026, addressed to Maarten Verwey, the Director-General for Economic and Financial Affairs at the EC.

The party claims the first version proposed a temporary redirection of pension contributions from universal pension funds to the National Social Security Institute (NSSI) between 2027 and 2029 to reduce the budget deficit. In contrast, the second version reportedly lacks this proposal and presents less favorable budget deficit forecasts.

Finance Minister Galab Donev has denied that the government proposed redirecting these funds, citing the version currently published on the European Commission website. “Da, Bulgaria” has called for the immediate release of all official correspondence and an investigation to determine if the discrepancy constitutes an attempt to mislead European institutions.
