Bulgaria flu update: Expert warns of potential vaccine delivery delays

Professor Todor Kantardzhiev, former director of the National Center of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, has stated that Bulgaria is not currently at the peak of a flu wave. He advised against panic regarding early seasonal cases, noting that isolated instances in late summer or early autumn do not necessarily signal an imminent epidemic.

However, Kantardzhiev warned that delays in influenza vaccine deliveries could strain the healthcare system. He noted that if vaccines do not arrive until late December, it would create significant difficulties. Production delays are attributed to the need to adjust vaccine compositions to match circulating flu strains.

Regarding pediatric supplies, 50,000 doses of nasal influenza vaccine have been secured for children. For the national immunization program, priority is given to children aged 2 to 7, particularly those with chronic illnesses. Kantardzhiev also recommended standard preventative measures, such as regular hand washing, maintaining physical distance from sick individuals, and using masks when a household member is ill.
