Bulgaria food prices show mixed wholesale trends

Wholesale food prices in Bulgaria are showing mixed trends according to data from the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Markets for the period of August 31 to September 4, 2026. Significant price increases were noted for tomatoes, which rose by 27.55% to 1.25 euro per kilogram, and fresh 3% fat milk, which increased by 26.96% to 1.46 euro per liter.

Other products experiencing price hikes include zucchini (11.69%), green salad (9.38%), flour (7.69%), butter (6.12%), and sugar (5.75%). Conversely, several items saw price decreases, including lemons (12.62%), onions (9.68%), green peppers (9.65%), potatoes (9.38%), and red peppers (8.73%).

Market analysis suggests that overall food prices remain close to levels seen last year. While some individual items have spiked, the total value of 30 core food products is nearly identical to the previous year. Experts note that the perceived high cost of living may be driven more by increases in services, such as tourism and dining, rather than food alone. Additionally, a significant gap persists between the prices offered by agricultural producers and the final prices paid by consumers.
