Bulgaria Health Minister accepts resignations over ambulance insurance failure
Bulgarian Health Minister Katya Ivkova has accepted the resignations of Deputy Minister Ivian Benishev, Emergency Medical Care Director Daniel Petrov, and Public Health Director Iliya Tasev.
The dismissals follow a failure to secure necessary civil liability and casco insurance for emergency ambulances and regional health inspection vehicles. Ivkova stated that the administrative process to ensure coverage should have commenced in the autumn of 2025, but instead, departments engaged in unproductive correspondence. Without these insurances, ambulances are unable to operate and must remain in garages.
The Ministry is implementing emergency measures to secure insurance for the remainder of the year and is initiating procedures for 2027 coverage. Ivkova noted that this crisis underscores the necessity of administrative reforms, specifically the proposed creation of a National Center for Emergency Medical Care to centralize administrative and organizational functions.
