Bulgaria HEMS air ambulance completes 370 emergency missions
The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) system in Bulgaria has completed 370 emergency medical missions since its launch on June 4, 2024.
Of these missions, 285 were secondary transfers between medical facilities, while 85 were primary missions transporting patients directly from incident sites to specialized medical centers. Between January 1 and September 30, 2026, the service performed 204 missions.
Air transport is most frequently utilized for patients suffering from severe traumatic and cardiovascular incidents, including polytrauma and multi-organ dysfunction resulting from road accidents, falls from heights, and workplace injuries. Patient demographics vary widely, with the youngest being a one-month-old infant and the oldest being 92 years old.
