Bulgaria historical milestones: Shipka Pass battles and Navy founding

Historical records highlight significant events in Bulgarian history occurring in mid-August. In 1877, the defense of the Shipka Pass entered its most intense phase. A Russian-Bulgarian detachment led by General Stoletov, consisting of approximately 5,500 personnel and 27 cannons, faced a massive Ottoman force of 27,000 soldiers and 34 cannons under Suleiman Pasha.

Additionally, August 12 marks the 1879 establishment of the Bulgarian military fleet, originally known as the Port Captaincy. While the fleet's official celebrations have evolved over time—including associations with the victory over the cruiser Hamidiye in 1912 and various administrative decrees in the 20th century—the date remains a significant historical milestone for the nation's maritime defense.
